چکیده

STATISTICS FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS. By Frederick J. Moore, Frank B. Kramer, and Robert G. Knowles. Philadelphia, The Blakiston Company, 1951. viii + 113 pp. The widespread need for more and improved techniques among medical investigators scarcely needs mentioning. This small book offers the essentials of commonly used statistical methods with a minimum of verbiage. The emphasis is placed on understanding the logical basis rather than the mere setting down of formulae and tests. The development is straightforward and economical; it is more rigorous than some elementary texts for biologists, but no effort is made to demonstrate the fundamental derivations. Most of the work deals with normal distributions, criteria for normalcy, and tests of significance. One chapter deals with non-normal distributions, and there is a short discussion of design of experiments and presentation of results. The book is valuable for one who wants some insight into the underlying philosophy of statistics, its possibilities and limitations. The investigator who wants ready-made formulae and tables for rote use will find this presentation too general. W. P. MCN.

Dreissenids in Lake Erie: an algal filter or a fertilizer?

After successfully occupying the benthos of all the Laurentian Great Lakes and connecting channels, quagga mussels [Dreissena rostriformis bugensis (Andrusov, 1897)] have been colonizing the western United States at a much faster rate. Study findings and management experience in the Great Lakes will benefit the water resource managers in the western United States and help them be better prepare...

Isolation, morphological and molecular identification of Dunaliella species in Hoz-e Soltan and Aran-va-Bidgol salt Lakes (Iran)

In this study, Dunaliella has been isolated in Jun. 2014 from Hoz-e Soltan and Aran-va-Bidgol salt Lakes (Iran). The isolates have been identified morphologically with the aid of simple light and invert microscope after isolation and purification on their specific medium (Moh202). By using molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and amplification of 18S rDNA gene primers, f...

Exotic Species in the Great Lakes: A History f Biotic Crises and Anthropogenic Introductions

Through literature review, we documented introductions of non-indigenous aquatic flora and fauna into the Great Lakes basin since the early 1800s. We focused on the origin, probable mechanism(s) of introduction and the date and locality of first discovery of Great Lakes exotic species. The Laurentian Great Lakes have been subject to invasion by exotic species since settlement of the region by E...

Recovery of sequences and extent of ancient lake in Jazmourian Playa based on lake terraces in Quaternary

Extended abstract 1-Introduction The natural environment is affected by climate, and its changes have different geomorphic forms. The dominance of different climatic phases and changes in the balance of matter and energy cause different shaping systems in the environment. Ancient lakes are one of the geomorphic forms of the Quaternary period, and today many of these lakes are either complete...

PICTURE OF THE MONTH Observation of Coexisting Mesoscale Lake-Effect Vortices over the Western Great Lakes

Mesoscale vortices are one of several types of wintertime lake-effect structures that are observed over the Great Lakes region as cold arctic air is rapidly modified from below by warm lake waters. These vortices are thought to occur less frequently than other lake-effect structures, such as wind-parallel snowbands (e.g., Kristovich 1993), which are responsible for greater than half of the year...

Microbial biodiversity in saline shallow lakes of the Monegros Desert, Spain.

The Monegros Desert contains one of the largest sets of inland saline lakes in Europe constituting a threatened landscape of great scientific and ecological value with large number of reported endemisms. We analyzed bacteria, archaea, and microbial eukaryotes from 11 saline lakes in winter and spring by rRNA gene fingerprinting and sequencing covering large salinity (2.7-22.1%) and temperature ...
